Bonifacio Corsica Day Trips

Bonifacio Day Trips

Although located on the southern-most tip of Corsica (l'Extreme Sud) and separated from the rest of the island by an expanse of maquis, Bonifacio is within driving distance of some great days out in Corsica's spectacular, craggy mountain interior (the Alta Rocca).

Alternatively you can easily take a boat trip from Bonifacio to the nearby islands of Lavezzi or even Sardinia. It is also only half an hour drive from Corsica's elegant, chic coastal town of Porto-Vecchio, and boat excursions run here too.

The Alta Rocca mountainous backbone of Corsica is a real treasure trove for visitors, with attractive mountain villages such as Sainte-Lucie de Tallano, intriguing ancient towns such as Sartène, and prehistoric settlement sites at Pianu di Levie. Away from the main resorts in Corsica, English is not that widely spoken so a basic knowledge of French, or a French phrasebook, is useful!

Porto-Vecchio Porto-Vecchio Glitzy, fashionable Porto-Vecchio has a yacht-filled marina, a small Old Town, chic boutiques, and in peak season is the place to be seen (especially for Italians, who love the resort). It has a bustling nightlife in peak season, drawing tourists with its nearby Via Notte, the largest outdoor nightclub in Europe.

Close to some of the best beaches in Corsica, Porto-Vecchio is a good place to visit for a stylish lunch or a vibrant evening out in summer.

Lavezzi Islands Lavezzi Islands Take a boat trip from Bonifacio to the tranquil Ile de Lavezzi, for pure relaxation in this remote, uninhabited island. Lap up the beauty of its idyllic beaches and shallow turquoise seas - an excellent spot to swim, snorkel or dive.

Famous with divers for its large colony of Grouper fish (Mérou, in French). Marked pathways enable you to explore the island. Remember to pack a picnic and sunscreen as the island has no facilities.

Santa Teresa di Gallura Sardinia Sardinia - Santa Teresa di Gallura Take the one hour ferry ride to attractive Santa Teresa di Gallura on the northernmost point of Sardinia, to sample an Italian holiday resort. In high season Santa Teresa becomes a lively coastal town, with plenty of good places to eat. It has its own sandy beach, Rena Bianca, and is close some beautiful wind-sculptured beaches at Capo Testa.
Levie Corsica Levie & Pianu di Levie A scenic drive into the heart of Alta Rocca, along winding roads with dramatic views, will take you to the village of Levie and its interesting Musée de l'Alta Rocca. Close by are the prehistoric sites of Curcuruzzu and Capula at Pianu di Levie, set deep in ancient oak woodland interspersed with large granite boulders. A circular forest walk takes you to Curcuruzzu's circular stone settlement with its majestic panoramic views over the valley, then on to Capula - the site of a medieval castle.
Sainte-lucie de Tallano Sainte-Lucie de Tallano One of the prettiest mountain villages in the Alta Rocca, Sainte-Lucie de Tallano is a lovely spot to enjoy a lazy lunch in the square of this typically Corsican village, whilst watching locals play pétanque.
Sartene Corsica Sartène An authentic Corsican hilltop town in the Alta Rocca mountainous region of Corsica, steeped in a history of superstition and vendettas. Its fascinating medieval Old Town has dark, narrow passageways and tall fortified houses. Combine with a visit to the nearby vineyard Domaine Fiumicicoli to sample Sartène's award winning wines.
